Council Tax freeze for Wandsworth means lowest Council Tax in the country

Wandsworth Council is taking decisive action to protect the borough’s residents from the ongoing Cost of Living crisis – putting in place the biggest support package in London and setting the lowest Council Tax in the country. 
 
As part of our commitment to deliver a fairer, compassionate, and more sustainable Wandsworth, councillors intend to freeze the main element of Council Tax – ensuring households pay the lowest bills in the country. The council is also increasing its Cost of Living support package to £15 million – the most generous in London. Find out more about our Cost of Living support.
 
Writing to residents, Council Leader Simon Hogg says: “We are freezing your Council Tax this year. We are an ambitious and compassionate council, so our work does not stop here. Through sound financial management, we will lead a decade of renewal for our borough. 
  
“Freezing Council Tax is one of the key things we can do to deliver a fairer, compassionate and more sustainable borough for everyone.” 

“Wandsworth is a fantastic place to live. Together we will make sure everyone in Wandsworth has access to the opportunities our borough provides.” 

A Wandsworth Band D bill from April onwards will be £961 – the lowest in the country. Some households in the west of the borough will pay slightly more as they are also subject to a separate levy from the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Conservators.

Looking after our most vulnerable residents is important to us. We will continue to provide the best service we can to our older residents and support the NHS. An increase of two per cent in the ringfenced adult social care levy this year will help to fund this vital work.   
 
The proposed freeze of the main element of Council Tax comes despite the borough receiving another real-terms cut in its Government funding – combined with the continuing high rate of inflation which is pushing up prices and the cost of delivering public services. 
 
Delivering better services for the same low Council Tax is a key priority for the council. This includes: 

• Greener borough: Guaranteed weekly bin collections, free monthly Mega Skips, and we’ll bring in food waste collection for every street this year.
• Safer streets: More School Streets than ever before, more CCTV cameras, and doubled support for victims of domestic violence.
• Stronger communities: Two new libraries, free school uniforms, and £15 million Cost of Living support package – the most generous response in London.

Sound financial management will secure a decade of renewal for our borough, including:

• Double our investment in roads and pavements.
• Build 1,000 new council homes for local families.
• Be a carbon neutral council by 2030.
